The Active Ageing Courses we run for carers and those they care for with dementia are delivered in 4 sessions. Although interlinked, each session can be taken as a stand alone session as well as being part of a series.

The course focuses on what people can do and not dementia as a limiting factor. Each session runs for 1.5hrs  Carers are given a pack for each session with handouts, equipment (balls, coordination charts etc) and a certificate. The course has recently been approved by NAPA (National Activity Provider for Ageing).

Thursday 2nd May
Session 1: Making Everyday Fun
Carers and cared for are asked to map out aspects about their personalities and lives, and shown how to construct inclusive games that are fun and meaningful. Everyday tasks are looked at and opportunities for therapeutic fun are identified in daily life.

Thursday 9th May
Session 2: Exercise for 2
In this session carers and cared for exercise together. They learn how strong each other really are and where they can potentially improve in aspects of physical health. Carers and cared-for walk away with a plan of exercise and new-found confidence in each other's abilities.

Thursday 16th May
Session 3: Exercise for the Mind
Carers and cared-for play a variety of games that focus on logic, technology, imagination, words, pictures, senses and memory. These games are spread out across the room and pairs move round to a different activity every 8-10 minutes. Carers are asked to adapt and evaluate which games work well. The group comes together at the end of the session to play one more game that shows how a personalised approach works best.

Thursday 23rd May
Session 4: Coordination and Memory
The final session uses sports science and techniques athletes implement to improve coordination and memory for both carers and cared-for. The session recaps on all of the previous sessions and focuses on the message "lose it or use it".
